PHASE TWO BEGINS
The Black-and-Red are on the ground in Oxnard, California following three days off in the Nation?s Capital. Much has changed over the course of those three days, with several roster moves impacting Ben Olsen?s team. To begin, yesterday United unveiled U.S. National Team forward Charlie Davies as the club?s newest signing.
Davies ran the full media gauntlet on Wednesday, beginning with a press conference in the Volkswagen Lounge followed by one-on-one access with numerous Washington journalists and Television personalities. Said Davies of his media work, ?It was definitely a great experience, a lot of work but very rewarding. I was humbled by the turnout [at the press conference] and now I?m looking forward to getting back to training.?
Davies did precisely that on Thursday morning, as the forward rejoined the squad atOxnard College for a full training session.United is beginning the second stage of the 2011 preseason following 13 days in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. United will train in Southern California until February 26, with three exhibition matches scheduled during the team?s stay.
On Saturday, February 19 United will face the Ventura County Fusion at 7:30 p.m., followed by a contest with the University of California Santa Barbara on Wednesday, February 22 at the same time. On Friday, February 25 the Black-and-Red complete the trip with a noon kickoff against Chivas USA on the Home Depot Center training fields.
ROSTER MOVES
Aside from Davies? signing, there have been other roster shakeups following United'sreturn from Florida. The Black-and-Red have a new face in goal, and Chinese forward Yang Men has concluded his trial and is no longer with the club.
Defender Julius James has been waived following a season and a half in Washington. With a surplus of central defenders on the roster, including Dejan Jakovic, Perry Kitchen, Rodrigo Brasesco, and versatile players like Marc Burch and Daniel Woolard, United decided to part ways with the Trinidad and Tobago National Team member.
Goalkeeper Steve Cronin and midfielder Junior Carreiro are not with the team in California. Cronin (fractured left wrist) and Carreiro (sprained ankle) did not make the trip due to injuries suffered in Florida camp. Both men are rehabilitating in Washington.
VILLARREAL ON TRIAL
United has a new trialist in camp. 22-year-old striker Sergio Villarreal is in California for the duration of United?s West Coast training camp. The Colombian comes to the Black-and-Red from Deportivo Cali of Colombia?s First Division.
