BLACK-AND-RED SET FOR SOCCER SHOWCASE
One day after a 3-1 friendly victory over local side Ventura County Fusion, D.C. United held a light training session this morning at Oxnard College. Tomorrow the Black-and-Red head further north up the 101 to take on the University of California Santa Barbara. The match will be played at UCSB's Harder Stadium as part of the school's Soccer Heaven Spring Showcase. For fans in the area, the contest is free and is being played at one of college soccer's premier venues, as UCSB hosted the 2010 College Cup Final and welcomed nearly 16,000 supporters. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. local time. Follow our live Twitter updates and join the fan conversation on dcunited.com
PONTIUS TO FACE OLD TEAM
Tomorrow night former UCSB Gaucho Chris Pontius will face his former college side. Pontius helped UCSB to the 2006 NCAA National Championship and went on to become an All-American in 2008 before being drafted by D.C. United. Now in his third year with the Black-and-Red, Pontius recently played 45 minutes at forward in Sunday's win over Ventura County.
INJURY UPDATES
Playing in his first preseason match of 2011, homegrown defender Ethan White put in 45 minutes in yesterday's friendly. This is good news for United, as White has been battling a calf injury suffered in the first week of preseason training. Now it seems that the former Maryland player is on his way back to fitness, and he trained today without complications.
Midfielder Dax McCarty did not feature for the Black-and-Red against the Fusion. The former FC Dallas player rolled his ankle last week and will resume full training shortly. Today McCarty did plenty of running on the side, and he will likely be back to full strength by the end of the week.
Clyde Simms and Santino Quaranta have both been battling illness since arriving in California, but the two midfielders are on the mend now and are in good health.
FRED TO WEAR 27
Recently acquired midfielder Fred will wear number 27 during his second stint with D.C. United. Now that fellow midfielder Stephen King is wearing Fred's old number 7, the Brazilian settled upon Branko Boskovic's former digit (Boskovic now wears 8) for the 2011 campaign.
