UFC 127: Dennis Siver Beats George Sotiropoulos

In a surprising lightweight result in Sydney, Dennis Siver won a unanimous decision over Australia's own George Sotiropoulos at UFC 127.

It was a very good fight that Siver won on the judges' scorcards by scores of 29-28, 30-28 and 30-27, improving his professional record to 18-7. Sotiropoulos falls to 14-3, and snaps an eight-fight winning streak.

"It was a hard, hard fight, but I could (follow) my game plan, and that's why I won," the German Siver said afterward, through his translator. "We trained so much every day."

After an exchange of strikes for a couple minutes, Sotiropoulos caught a Siver kick and tried to take Siver to the ground. Bus Siver did a great job of hopping around on one foot while Sotiropoulos held his other foot, and eventually Sotiropoulos let go without Siver ever hitting the floor. It was a great display of takdeown defense and balance by Siver.

When Siver wouldn't go down, it seemed to frustrate Sotiropoulos, and then Siver came through with some powerful punches, knocking Sotiropoulos down twice. Sotiropoulos was dazed and wobbly, and it looked like Siver was going to put him away, but Sotiropoulos managed to survive the round.

In the second round Siver did a great job of using his striking to create separation between the two of them, and Sotiropoulos had trouble getting close enough to go for a takedown. And when Sotiropoulos did go for a takedown, Siver just shrugged him off. In the final minute Sotiropoulos finally started to take control as Siver looked like he was fading, but I gave the second round to Siver.

The third round was a back-and-forth battle in which both men landed plenty of shots, although Siver's seemed more powerful. Sotiropoulos attempted several takedowns but never got the fight to the ground. When the third round ended neither fighter seemed to have a feeling for whether he had won. But all three judges agreed it was Siver's fight. I thought so, too. It was a great showing for Siver, who followed the perfect game plan.

Kitchen living up to early expectations in DC

WASHINGTON ? Back in January, D.C. United?s coaching staff was ecstatic when Perry Kitchen was available with the third overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft.

Nearly six weeks later, the tenacious 19-year-old has proved worthy of the hype and buzz created before the draft for the central defender/midfielder from Akron.

?He?s just who we?d thought he?d be,? United coach Ben Olsen said, "a very talented kid who?s ultra-competitive."

Kitchen has lined up exclusively as a center back in the five preseason friendlies in which he?s appeared DC, after playing for Akron as a defensive midfielder during his lone season with the Zips last year.

The shift back to a position with which he?s familiar ? he played there for the U. U-17 side at the 2009 World Cup ? hasn?t been a difficult one.

?It hasn?t been too big of an adjustment because I?m used to that position,? he said. "I?ve played there for years, so it?s not too much different, just a line back."

While he was a coveted commodity for the coaching staff during the draft season, Kitchen was something of an unknown for his current teammates. As one of the younger members on the roster, he?s had to prove himself in camp to some of the more experienced players around him.

?I?m very impressed with him,? midfielder Dax McCarty said. ?He?s got a lot of maturity for a young kid. He came in the league at the same age I did, and I certainly wasn?t as vocal or ready to step on the field as he is.?

Whether that means Kitchen starts from the very first game this year, however, is yet to be determined. But it was a good sign during Tuesday?s training session at RFK Stadium that he worked alongside Dejan Jakovic in a possible center back partnership for the 2011 campaign.

?As camp has gone on, he?s taken on a bigger role back there become a pretty verbal leader,? goalkeeper Pat Onstad said. ?I think for a guy like Dejan, who?s a quiet but very good defender, it?s a good partnership right now developing.?

Still, Kitchen is eager to finally get out there and play. Competition for starting spots is going to be extremely tough in DC this year, so Kitchen is by no means a lock to start when the season begins against Columbus on March 19 at RFK Stadium.

?He?s going to be in for a wakeup call when he?s going up against guys like Omar Cummings and Conor Casey, who are very good forwards in this league,? McCarty said. ?He certainly has the ability to handle it. It?s just going to be about getting the experience.?

D.C. United signs defender Chris Korb

Washington, D.C. ? D.C. United announced today that the club has signed defender Chris Korb. The fullback joined United after being selected 31st overall in this year?s MLS SuperDraft.

"Chris has worked hard throughout training camp, and we have been pleased with his competitive nature and athleticism," said General Manager Dave Kasper. "He is able to play on both sides of our defense at outside back and we are excited about his future with D.C. United."

Korb comes to United following a three-year career at Akron after transferring from Xavier in 2007. The 23-year-old was an All-MAC First Team selection as a junior in 2009, and after his senior season in 2010 the defender was named to the All-MAC Second Team. Registering 2,208 minutes of play for the Zips in 2010, Korb started all 25 matches at fullback for Caleb Porter?s side. In his college career, Korb scored two goals and compiled 13 assists.
