United in Fort Lauderdale: Day 2

Washington, DC

TURNING UP THE HEAT

Day two in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and things are getting competitive in D.C. United training camp. Ben Olsen led his players onto the practice pitch this morning for the first session of the day, where players competed in several small-sided games that brought out the best in each individual. "Guys were getting after it today, I think [Fort Lauderdale] is a good change of scenery, really the pace has been frantic," said United veteran Santino Quaranta. "It's good, our energy is good, and we had a lot of possession and fitness today. It takes a few days to get settled, and it will continue to get better because our guys are upbeat." Last night at training new arrival Joseph Ngwenya took his fitness test and passed with flying colors, easily besting the dreaded three-mile Cooper test.

Today Ngwenya mixed it up with fellow new signings Dax McCarty and Josh Wolff, and Quaranta seems pleased with the new blend of players. "The new guys are good. You know we have good soccer players, they are going to help bring this team together. Dax [McCarty] has ability and experience, [Josh] Wolff's resume speaks for itself, and Ngwenya showed us some things today." Quaranta concludes, "We have a clean slate, guys are going to work for their positions, and there is a lot of competition in this squad." The players headed out for one final training session late this afternoon before repeating the cycle tomorrow morning.

Though he is likely to miss both training sessions, Davies' week-long evaluation period begins in earnest on Thursday morning. Davies will have a hectic day of travel in front of him. Tomorrow the forward departs Basel, Switzerland for London, where he will connect to Miami International Airport via London Heathrow. We will have plenty of content on dcunited.com surrounding Davies' inclusion in preseason training, so stay tuned.
