LAST DAY OF TRAINING
The Black-and-Red closed out their final training session in Fort Lauderdale this morning ahead of the team's last remaining friendly against Trinidad and Tobago's Under-20 National Team tomorrow. Ben Olsen addressed his players following the session, thanking them for the considerable effort each member of the club has put into the first leg of the 2011 preseason. Tomorrow United plays the Soca Warriors in a closed-door scrimmage at Lockhart Stadium. Thus far in preseason United is 2-0 in exhibition contests, beating Canada's U-20's earlier this week 5-1 followed by a 4-0 victory over Florida International University on Wednesday. The Black-and-Red depart Florida on Sunday, returning to Washington for three days before taking off for California on February 16.
JAKOVIC, DAVIES RETURN TO CAMP
Two familiar faces were at team breakfast this morning prior to training, as defender Dejan Jakovic and forward Charlie Davies returned to United camp. Jakovic returned to Fort Lauderdale last night following a flight from Larissa, Greece, where the centerback played 90 minutes for Canada's senior side in a 1-0 loss to the Greeks. Said Jakovic of being back in camp, "The [Canada] friendly was good, but it's great being back with the club after the long flight."
Davies traveled a considerably shorter distance, as the trialist went up to Washington for less than 24 hours to receive a battery of medical tests. The United States National Team player trained this morning with the Black-and-Red and is available for selection in tomorrow's friendly.
SOCCER TENNIS CHAMPIONS
In Thursday's training session Head Coach Ben Olsen split his squad into teams of two as the the Black-and-Red competed in a soccer tennis tournament. Played with standard tennis rules, the players faced off against each other in a single elimination tournament. Ultimately the final was contested between Jed Zayner and Dax McCarty's team and an all-coaching squad composed of Olsen and Assistant Coach Chad Ashton. The coaches fell at the final hurdle, with Zayner and McCarty claiming the doubles title.
