Three days after spinning the already-wacky world of college football recruiting off its axis by committing on national television/not signing/decommitting -- Cyrus Kouandjio finally stopped the madness Saturday afternoon. The massive DeMatha Catholic High School offensive tackle actually put pen to paper and signed his national letter-of-intent with Alabama, ending a wild ride that had him announcing he would sign with arch-rival Auburn on ESPNU on Wednesday and then waffling within the span of minutes.
"He said he wanted to respect his friends -- and fans," Jean Claude Kouandjio, the player's father, told Tidesports.com. "He wanted to respect the advice of his friends, people who admire him. That's what he wanted to do.
"The text messages he received from his friends, people who admire him, it's overwhelming. They want him to go (to) Alabama. He wants to respect those people."
Kouandjio, the 6-foot-7, 322-pound younger brother of Alabama redshirt freshman offensive lineman Arie Kouandjio, is a five-star prospect considered by many as the best offensive line talent in America. The younger Kouandjio became the 22nd signee for Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide, which claimed the No. 1 national team recruiting ranking according to Rivals.com.
Alabama still has a chance to pad that lofty ranking, as consensus No. 1 athlete DE Jadeveon Clowney (6-6, 247, Rock Hill, S.C., South Pointe HS), is likely to decide among Alabama, Clemson and South Carolina on Feb. 14 -- his 18th birthday.
