Felipe Lopez Gets Minors Deal With Rays

Felipe LopezThe Rays still could use another reliever or two before spring training begins, but they added an extra infielder Tuesday in Felipe Lopez.

The well-traveled veteran would get $1 million if he spends the entire year in the majors and has a chance to earn an additional $1 million in incentives, according to ESPN Deportes.

Lopez will have a chance to make the Rays' roster as a backup to Evan Longoria, Reid Brignac and Sean Rodriguez. The switch-hitter spent most of 2010 with the Cardinals before they cut him loose and the Red Sox scooped him up for the last couple weeks of the season.

Boston did so knowing Lopez would be a Type B free agent and hoped to net a draft pick when he signed elsewhere this winter. But because he got only a minor league deal, no supplemental first-round pick will be forthcoming for the Red Sox.

The Rays would be the eighth team Lopez has played for during a major league career that began in 2001. He broke in with the Blue Jays three years after they made him the eighth overall pick in the draft, and has since plied his trade for the Reds, Nationals, Cardinals (twice), Diamondbacks, Blue Jays and Red Sox.

His best season came in 2005, when he was the Reds' lone representative at the All-Star Game and ultimately collected a Silver Slugger after hitting .291 with 23 homers, 85 RBI and an .838 OPS.
