Daniel Snyder Demands Apology, Says Paper 'Crossed the Line'

Daniel SnyderDALLAS -- Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder said Friday that he wants an apology from the Washington City Paper. Snyder filed suit this week against the free weekly's parent company, asking for more than $2 million in damages for alleged libel and defamation in a recent article which depicted him as the devil and criticized his wife's role as the NFL spokesperson for breast cancer.

"I've been criticized (plenty)," Snyder said while speaking at a Super Bowl for this first time in his 12 seasons in command of the Redskins. "We lose, I do something wrong. Have at me. I respect the media. My father was a journalist. But don't call me a criminal. And don't lie. And, particularly, don't make fun of my wife's efforts at breast cancer awareness.

"My wife (has) had breast cancer. Enough is enough. (They) crossed the line. It's that simple. Apologize. What's right is right and what's wrong is wrong. Put horns on me? I'm Jewish. Are you crazy? You don't do that."

Snyder, who bought the Redskins from the estate of the lack Jack Kent Cooke when he was 34, said, "I've matured into a good, quality owner."

He remains optimistic that $100 million defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth and six-time Pro Bowl quarterback Donovan McNabb, suspended and benched respectively by new coach Mike Shanahan last season, could still be Redskins in 2011.

"I want (Albert) to do the right thing and work with his coach and the general manager, Bruce Allen," Snyder said. "I handed the keys to these guys. I support the decisions that they make. I don't think they have a clue about which way they're going yet about Albert Haynesworth, about any situation.

"I think we're very a competitive football team (despite going 6-10 last season and 10-22 the past two years). I'm hopeful, but you never know. ... I like Donovan very, very much, as a person, (he's) unbelievable. He's a real good player. I'm optimistic (that he'll be back). Let's see what happens."

Another former star who wound up becoming greatly alienated from the Redskins was ex-Pro Bowl linebacker LaVar Arrington, the face of the franchise before a dispute over a bonus in a contract extension combined with a bad relationship with the new defensive coaches caused his release in 2006. Snyder addressed the extremely bad blood between the owner and his former player, now a studio host for Washington's 106.7 The Fan.

"I've always felt positive about him," Snyder said. "It was nice. We drafted him (second overall in 2000). He was important to us. It didn't work out at the end."

Snyder confirmed that he's looking to build a state-of-the art replacement for Redskins Park, the team's 18-year-old practice facility in Ashburn, Va., in time for the 2012 season. Snyder said that he would like to have a complex closer to FedEx Field in Landover, Md. While Snyder still wants a Super Bowl for his outdoor stadium, he jokingly compared Dallas' unexpected wintry weather to Fargo, N.D.

"Let's wait until Monday and you guys tell us (how it went)," Snyder said. "Do it that way: Let the fans experience it and see if they have a great time. Hopefully, it'll be a great game."
